Three Steps to Keep Your Parking Customers Safe During a Pandemic

As our country continues reopening during the COVID-19 pandemic, one question that persists for parking facility owners and property managers is: “How can I keep my parking customers safe during such an unprecedented time?” To aid in this effort, we’ve identified three main steps to take when making your parking assets COVID-safe.

Educate and Empower Employees

Once you review recommendations and guidelines from state and federal authorities and develop specific processes and protocols for your location, successfully implementing them is key. It is critical that your employees have this information and completely understand what to do in any situation that may arise, from self-temperature checks – and staying home when registering a temperature of 100 degrees or higher – to social distancing, wearing masks, and more. Because strict adherence to cleaning and sanitation practices is the top priority, it is important to ensure employees are well-versed in all processes.

Utilize Current Technologies

If you don’t already have a parking system installed at your facility, now is the time to strongly consider the investment. Not only will it completely protect your revenue, but it will also allow for cashless and touchless transactions, which have become increasingly important throughout the pandemic. If you already have a technology solution in place, make sure it has the latest software and firmware updates, as many technology providers are building in contactless parking solutions and pushing these updates to their products.

Communicate to Customers

From well-placed and visible signage to scripted guest interactions, it is important to clearly communicate all procedures in place to ensure the safety of the parking public. This will drive consumer confidence in your sanitation practices and cleaning regimen, which assures guests that they are parking in a safe environment and that their health and safety is your highest priority. Additionally, your communications should indicate your policy regarding guests’ practice of social distancing and wearing face masks while at the parking facility to further instill consumer confidence.

While not an all-encompassing plan, these simple steps can provide a parking environment that people will trust. While it may seem daunting at the outset, once these measures are in place, it will become part of the standard operating procedures at your location and, overtime, will become commonplace.
